Coventry University’s Pre-sessional English (PSE) programmes help prepare students for academic study on their chosen future course. PSE programmes focus on improving students’ language ability and developing their academic and study skills.
Course Details
- Depending on the IELTS/TOEFL level students are starting from, they will have 16 or 8 hours of class per week. Students starting from an overall score of IELTS 4.0 or 4.5/TOEFL score of 35-46 need more time and English language practice to reach IELTS 5.5/TOEFL 79, so they will have 16 hours of class for 24 weeks (spread over two semesters). Students starting with an overall IELTS score of 5.0/TOEFL score of 60 will have 8 hours of class for 12 weeks (one semester).
- Students are placed into small classes with experienced, qualified tutors who are trained in preparing them for university-level study. (Average class size of 12-14 students.)
- In addition to classes, students will have regular tutorials and are expected to complete independent self-study, lesson preparation, assignments and homework tasks outside class time.

How will you be tested?
Students will be examined in each skill at the end of the programme to assess their level of achievement. They will also be assessed on each of the skills during the programme, including the production of a longer piece of writing. Course content and materials are linked to assessments and practice materials are available.
Students enrolled in the PSE programmes will not be required to retake the IELTS exam upon completion of the course. Assessment will be by taking the Coventry University English Test (CUET) or an equivalent assessment designed by the programme instructors.
Course Overview:
The PSE programme consists of two levels of study. Placement into the levels depends on achieving the minimum required IELTS score for each level. Upon completing the course, the student will be eligible to join foundation level at Coventry University Branch at TKH.

Terms & Conditions
Attendance Policy:
- Students enrolled in a PSE programme are expected to attend all of the timetabled sessions. Attendance will be carefully monitored for all enrolled students at the different levels of the PSE programme.
- If the student fails to meet the requirement of 90% and the attendance record falls below this percentage, they shall be automatically withdrawn from the programme and shall not be eligible for a refund of the programme fees.
- Students whose attendance level goes below 90% at any point in the programme will be reported to the Admissions Office to proceed with their withdrawal procedure on a non-refund basis of the programme fees.
- Students who are withdrawn from a PSE programme due to attendance are eligible to reapply for another PSE programme enrolment at a later iteration.
Withdrawal Policy:
- The university preserves the right to withdraw any student enrolled in a PSE programme based on attendance level and/or failure to comply with the financial commitment to the university as per the tuition fees announced upon registration on the programme.
- The student has the right to withdraw from the PSE programme at any time throughout the duration of the programme. In such case, the student shall be eligible to re-enrol in the PSE programme at a later iteration but shall not be eligible for a refund of the programme fees.
Pass/Fail policy:
- In case of failure to pass the PSE programme, the student will be eligible to re-enrol in another PSE programme at a later iteration with new enrolment procedures and fees.
- Failure to pass the PSE programme will result in not attaining the final acceptance offer from Coventry University Branch at TKH since the language requirement for admission has not been met. Accordingly, the student shall not be enrolled into the foundation year but will be eligible for another retake of the programme or a withdrawal.
Programme specifications:
- All PSE programmes run in small classes of maximum 15 students to allow for optimum student engagement and better learning experience.
- Trained and experienced English language professionals from the Department of English for Academic Purposes at Coventry University Branch at TKH will be assigned to teach these programmes.
- Students will make use of all TKH facilities during the period of their enrolment on the programme.
- All PSE programmes are conducted face-to-face on campus at Coventry University Branch at TKH at this stage of the programme offering. Online access to learning material shall be made available by each tutor to enrolled students as per the level of enrolment.
- Students are expected to be full-time students during the length of this programme and should not engage in any other programme or tasks outside the university that might affect their attendance of classes.
